"The mission of Pura Vida is to harness the power of business to create good and serve the poor. We believe that, together, consumers and business leaders can join to promote a new type of capitalism – one that changes the way we think about business." - Pura Vida Mission
Founded in 1998, Pura Vida Coffee is a unique, rapidly growing, charitably-owned specialty coffee company that sells 100% certified Fair Trade, organic coffee to individual and institutional consumers in the U.S. in order to provide direct help to at-risk children and families living in coffee-growing countries. A unique blend of for-profit and non-profit, Pura Vida strives to operate in a manner that is both “tough-minded and tender-hearted.”
Co-founder Chris Dearnley has lived in Costa Rica for over 16 years. He coordinates the Pura Vida Partners staff and volunteers in the implementation of Pura Vida's programs for at-risk children and families in Central America.
"Pura Vida" means "full of life" in Spanish - but also means "cool" in Costa Rican slang. Listen to more about Dearnley's cool coffee company during his interview with eClips where he discusses the background of Pura Vida and shares thoughts on socially responsible entrepreneurship.
